Wells

Vicars’ Close, Wells is the oldest continually inhabited street in Europe and houses the Vicars Choral of the choir and the organist for the Cathedral. The houses were constructed in the late 14th and early 15th centuries and are now Grade I listed.

The Cathedral have secured phase one funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund (NLHF) to improve the energy efficiency of the properties through restoration works to their roofs and facades, improve and repair below ground drainage and open up several spaces to the public.

Conducting detailed surveys of all 27 properties has enabled us to define the necessary repairs to the timber roofs. Working with drainage surveyors, all below ground drainage has been recorded and the understanding of the condition, routing and connectivity of the existing below ground drainage over such a large site has allowed us to design repairs and improvements.
