Pumphandle Social Space
London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine (LSHTM)
As part of the LSHTM’s seven-year masterplan, the lower ground floor has been transformed into a vibrant social hub. Designed to foster connection and engagement, the space now features modern amenities, improved circulation, and enhanced natural light achieved by relocating the kitchen. The stunning new staircase, known as the ‘big steps’, are more than just a staircase – they are a focal point, encouraging social interaction and redefining how the space is used.
The redesigned refectory incorporates flexible spaces, with movable partitions and swivel tables integrated into the structure. The team navigated structural alterations, removing an existing staircase and sections of flooring while ensuring the integrity of the surrounding structure. Through innovative design and precise engineering, new steel beams, reinforced edges, and custom solutions were implemented to create a safe, versatile, and visually striking space.
This dynamic redesign blends functionality and creativity, making the lower ground floor a welcoming and modern environment for everyone at LSHTM.
