The scheme has retained but redeveloped the existing 1980s quayside office block – North Quay House – owned by Legal & General UK Property Fund. The four-storey, steel-frame corner extension provides a new double height atrium entrance and additional office space. New cladding on the existing facades enhances the building’s environmental performance with a level, landscaped courtyard and interior refurbishment completing the transformation. Engaging with a cladding contractor early in the design process proved beneficial in finding a solution for the new facade that delivered the client’s aspiration without requiring significant alteration or strengthening of the existing structure. The client has a strong sustainability ethic and so low carbon materials, including cross laminated timber floor slabs, were included in the design which aspires to achieve BREEAM Excellent accreditation.
