The Emporium, Bartholomew Row, Birmingham

This project is for high end student accommodation with shared leisure and workspaces. The terraced properties were repurposed with the workshops converted into student accommodation. These Victorian and Georgian Grade II listed buildings were in a poor state of repair but were some of the last remaining examples of their kind in Birmingham. As high value assets they required sympathetic repairs. The challenge was to deliver compliant reuse of the buildings, whilst undertaking detailed structural repairs and retaining as much of the original fabric as possible. To assist with the design we advised on the suitable use of the spaces and established the condition of the masonry using point cloud data. Due to the construction on the same site of a new 14 storey tower block, also providing student accommodation, we had to carefully review the tower block’s foundations. The project was completed in Spring 2019.
